This song is a reflection of many road trips I had with my family and yes, even "Kiwi" our family's traveling cat :). We ventured South on many occasions where alligators in the yard was a very real deal. This song is also a metaphor of life's journeys. We start in the back seat hoping one day to take control and ride freely through life. As we mature in life, we find it is always better to let God take control and lead us through life's wandering course. The back seat journey is now a preferred state with our Savior in control. albeit slow at times, the journey seems like it takes forever and then some, but reality is life passes quickly. See James 4:14. " For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appeareth for a little time, and afterward vanisheth away."
